When God Feels Far Away
Spiritual dryness is a tough season where God feels distant, prayers seem to bounce off the ceiling, and worship lacks its usual joy. It’s like wandering in a desert, thirsty for connection. But these times are standard, even for biblical giants like David, who cried in Psalm 42, “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me?”
Causes can vary: unconfessed sin, overwhelming busyness, emotional burnout, or even physical factors like health issues. To combat it, pursue God actively, regardless of your feelings. Worship through music or nature, even if it feels mechanical at first – Habakkuk 3:17-18 models rejoicing in God amid lack.
Journal your thoughts to process emotions, and seek wise counsel from a mentor or pastor. Reading books on spiritual disciplines, like “The Practice of the Presence of God” by Brother Lawrence, can offer fresh insights.
I’ve experienced this dryness after a stressful period, where God seemed silent. But persistent pursuit – daily showing up in prayer and scripture – eventually reignited my passion. James 4:8 promises that if we draw near to God, He will draw near to us. If you’re feeling distant, press in with faith; refreshment and closeness await on the other side.
