Life is full of decisions. Some are small, like what to eat or wear. Others are big, like choosing a career, moving to a new place, or navigating a tough relationship. In those moments, we often lean on our own logic, experience, or friends’ advice. But the book of Proverbs points us to a better way.
One of the most loved passages in the Bible comes from Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” (ESV)
These verses are life-changing yet straightforward: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart.” Not just part of it. Not just when things make sense. All of it. That means handing over our worries, plans, and fears to God.
Then it says Do not lean on your own understanding. Our minds are limited. We see only part of the picture. We make plans based on what we know today, but God sees tomorrow. Leaning on Him instead of ourselves brings real peace.
In all your ways acknowledge Him. That means inviting God into every area of life. The big choices and the daily ones. Pray about your work, your family, your struggles. Talk to Him like He is right there, because He is.
The promise is beautiful: He will make straight your paths. Not always easy paths, but clear ones. He will guide you step by step, remove obstacles you cannot see, and lead you where you need to go.
Proverbs 16:9 connects to this: “The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps.” (ESV)
We can make all the plans we want, but God directs the outcome. Trusting Him keeps us flexible and open to His better plan.
Proverbs 28:26 warns, “Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered.” (ESV)
Relying only on ourselves leads to foolish mistakes. Walking with God brings safety and deliverance.
In real life, this looks like praying before a big decision instead of rushing ahead. It means obeying God even when it does not make sense at first. It means resting when you are anxious because you have given it to Him.
I have seen people stress over choices, trying to figure everything out on their own. But when they surrender and trust God, doors open in ways they never expected. Peace comes even when the situation is still challenging.
Trusting God over our own understanding is not weakness. It is wisdom. It frees us from having to carry everything ourselves.
Start today. Whatever you are facing, pray these verses. Give it to God with all your heart. Acknowledge Him in the details. Watch Him straighten the path ahead.
What about you? Where do you need to stop leaning on your own understanding right now? Trust Him fully, and see what He does.
