Finding Joy in the Midst of Suffering Scripture

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds.” James 1:2

Regardless of the situation, suffering is a common human experience, whether it is due to sickness, financial uncertainty, or the loss of a loved one. As we move into 2025, with uncertainty in the world and challenges in our personal lives, the idea of finding joy may seem impossible. The fruits of the Spirit include joy (Galatians 5:22), and God invites us to embrace this joy whenever possible, even in difficult times. But how do we go about doing this?

James’ words may seem too extreme: “Consider it pure joy” when you face trials. James is not asking us to pretend to be happy when we’re experiencing hardship, but to find a deeper, God-given joy that is also present in these experiences. This joy comes from the awareness that God is at work in our trials, developing our faith and moving us closer to His image (James 1:3-4). Think of Paul and Silas singing hymns in prison (Act 16: 25). The joy they had was not due to the fact that they were in chains, but because they could sing in the presence and purpose of God.

Practically, try gratitude journaling, one simple way to practice the joy of gratitude. Each day, write one thing God has done, even in the type of pain you are experiencing today. For instance, maybe it was a friend who wrote an encouraging card, a moment you had peace, or God’s reminding you of His promises. Worship music can also be beneficial for your spirit, allowing you to be anchored in the goodness of God. I remember when I was transitioning out a job, when I sang praise, the reality of my stress did not simply disappear, but it certainly reminded me that God was bigger than the job loss.

Finding joy in suffering is not living in denial. Rather, it is defiance against despair; that God is still writing our story, it’s not over. Jesus endured the cross “for the joy set before Him” (Hebrews 12:2). We can too, we have a hope that extends into eternity.

What trial are you facing? This week, how might you sample one thing of joy, either in gratitude or through worship? Leave your comments and experiences below to encourage others!
