My Faith Journey – Six

Building Lasting Habits

Sticking to spiritual disciplines like daily prayer, Bible reading, or regular worship attendance is trickier than it sounds. We often start strong with New Year’s resolutions or after a powerful church service, only for life to interrupt and derail us. However, consistency in these practices is crucial to building intimacy with God, just as it is in any vital relationship in your life.

Jesus modeled perfect consistency, rising early to pray even when exhausted from ministry (Mark 1:35). The apostle Paul urged young Timothy to train himself in godliness, comparing it to physical exercise (1 Timothy 4:7). It’s not about drudgery or legalism; it’s about discipline that leads to joy and growth in your faith.

To build lasting habits, start small and set realistic goals. Instead of committing to an hour of Bible study, begin with one verse a day or a two-minute prayer. Use habit-stacking techniques, such as linking your Bible time to your morning coffee routine, so it becomes automatic. Apps and tools can provide structure – try a reading plan on YouVersion or set reminders on your phone for prayer times.

Accountability is crucial for staying consistent. Join a small group at church where you can share your progress and encourage one another, or find a prayer partner to check in with weekly. And remember to extend grace to yourself for slip-ups; Lamentations 3:22-23 assures us that God’s mercies are new every morning, so each day is a fresh start.

I’ve struggled with consistency in my own spiritual life, especially during busy seasons. What turned it around for me was setting specific, achievable goals and tracking them in a journal. Over time, those disciplines shifted from feeling like chores to natural parts of my day, bringing peace and a closer connection to God. If you’re finding it hard to stay consistent, recommit today with small steps. God honors your efforts and will meet you right where you are, helping you grow one habit at a time.
