We all struggle with pride sometimes. It shows up when we want credit for everything, refuse to admit we are wrong, or look down on others. Pride feels good for a moment, but it sets us up for trouble. The book of Proverbs warns about it over and over and shows a better way: humility.
One of the best known verses says it clearly. Proverbs 16:18 states, “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” (ESV)
Pride blinds us. It makes us think we are unbeatable, and then we crash hard. A haughty spirit lifts us up in our own eyes right before everything comes tumbling down.
Proverbs 18:12 adds, “Before destruction a man’s heart is haughty, but humility comes before honor.” (ESV)
Notice the contrast. Haughtiness leads to destruction. Humility leads to honor. God turns things upside down from what the world expects. The proud get brought low. The humble get lifted up.
Proverbs 22:4 promises, “The reward for humility and fear of the LORD is riches and honor and life.” (ESV)
When we stay humble and keep proper respect for God, good things follow. Not always instant wealth, but true riches like peace, strong relationships, and a life that counts.
Look at Proverbs 11:2: “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.” (ESV)
Pride brings shame and bad decisions. Humility opens the door to real wisdom because humble people are teachable. They listen and learn.
Proverbs 29:23 says, “One’s pride will bring him low, but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor.” (ESV)
God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. That is a pattern all through Scripture.
What does humility look like in daily life? It means saying sorry when you mess up. It means giving others credit instead of grabbing it all. It means serving without needing applause. It means trusting God more than your own strength.
I have seen pride wreck relationships and opportunities. A person refuses help, insists on their way, and ends up isolated. But I have also seen humble people grow. They admit mistakes, seek advice, and watch God open doors they never expected.
Pride is a trap we all face. Humility is the way out. It starts with small choices: listen more than you speak, thank God for successes, treat everyone with respect.
Choose humility today. Let go of the need to be right or look important. God sees and He honors those who walk lowly before Him.
